What were you doing prior to entering the seminary? After some time in the military, I studied theology and catechetics at Franciscan University in Ohio. That led to an opportunity to do some evangelization work at my local parish, St Rose of Lima in Haddon Heights, over the last three years.
What influenced your decision to enter the seminary? While being raised in a supportive and encouraging family, I started to own my faith more and desire to serve in some way after a ministry trip in high school. In college and the military, I encountered more Christians who deepened my desire to spiritually grow and to do ministry. Upon leaving the military, I gladly followed a mentor’s advice to take time to consider my own beliefs and life’s path. That helped lead to a full return to my Catholic roots and further pursuit of faith and service. In the fall of 2014, I felt like God spoke to me in a way that he has before (through a combination of prayer, people, circumstances and timing) to encourage me to look into the seminary. I considered religious and diocesan life; open doors, my life experiences, and a feeling of peace helped me in my decision to apply to the diocese. Throughout the process, I have been supported and prayed for in generous ways by my wonderful family and friends.
Advice to other young men considering the priesthood: Something I have been considering is that God is able to help us, especially in areas where we realize that we cannot help ourselves. That we just need to say I don’t know how to do this, try, and (maybe with a smile) trust God to help us.
