The Value of Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving During Lent

Ash Wednesday, the Catholic Church enters the time of Lent, one of the holiest seasons in the liturgical year. As we go through the season of Lent, we should do three major things. First, we should grow closer to the Lord through our Prayer. Throughout Lent, we should try to build good prayerful habits and grow closer to the Lord. Second, we should also serve the Lord by giving alms. If you are unfamiliar with the topic of almsgiving, this is the act of donating money or goods to the poor or practicing other acts of charity. A great act of charity includes going to your local soup kitchen and volunteering, and if you do not have time, donating to that soup kitchen is also a great act of almsgiving. The third aspect of Lent is the act of practicing self-control through fasting. As we fast for the period of Lent, we can look to our Lord who spent 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness fasting from all food. Fasting does not always have to be fasting from food. You can always fast from things such as technology or even warm showers. As we prepare for the Lord’s resurrection during this time of Lent, it might be very easy to see what someone else might be fasting from and try to one-up them.

As we go through this holy season of Lent, we should never compare what we are doing during Lent to what others might be doing. The truth is, everyone’s soul and relationship with God are different, so what might work for someone will work terribly for someone else. Overall, as we walk with the Lord through this season of Lent, we should focus heavily on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We should also take advantage of all the graces we can receive during this holy season of Lent.
